After that, I'm honored to be involved with the latest iteration of Alverno Presents, this time with Phil Cook (Hiss Golden Messenger, Megafaun), Chris Porterfield (Field Report), Caitlin Canty and others. .............. 12/13/15 Just returned from upstate NY, where I was playing with The Stray Birds, a great trio from Nashville. Heavy-weight production team Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Paul Simon) and Justin Guip (Levon Helm) were captaining the ship; needless to say, I was in heaven. Look for this great record to be released soon. ............ 8/13/15 What a summer so far. I experienced several new festivals with Field Report, including the inaugural Eaux Claires and the Newport Folk Festival. After our set at the the latter, Blake Mills took the stage and proceeded to elevate everyone's notion of what is possible in music. I also taught at two camps that ceaselessly inspire me: Miles of Music and American Vernacular Dance week at Augusta Heritage Center. Beautiful stylistic diversity and talent on display at these gatherings - highly recommended. This week held the second session for a record I'm producing by Wisconsin songwriter Simon Balto. We worked right here in my basement, which resembles more and more the boyhood dream of a secret clubhouse/gearlocker/home studio. No complaints, although the laundry is becoming more difficult to access. But who needs clean clothes when you're working from home? Yikes. The hopper's full of future collaborations: a trio with Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Alec Spiegelman, exploring new music with The Stray Birds, more Field Report tours, and shows with Kristin Andreassen, JE Sunde, and others. Stay tuned. .............. 12/30/14 I wrapped up 2014 with the start of a great new (yet to be named) trio. Alec Spiegelman (Cuddle Magic), Anna Roberts-Gevalt and I spent 4 days writing together in central PA before recording some of it in Philly and then performing it all at a sold-out NYC concert. We're feeling energized and inspired by the experience, so keep an ear out. The new year is just around the corner, and what better way to kick it off than traveling to Europe (it's my first time) to open for Wilco's Jeff Tweedy. His music has been a heavy influence on my writing and listening for so long... Those dates are listed to the right. More tour dates and summer festivals with Field Report will be announced soon; in the meantime I'll have the great pleasure of collaborating in the studio on some friends' new albums and happily braving the frigid Wisconsin winter. Happy holidays. ............ 10/7/14 Our new Field Report record is out today on Partisan Records. Check out the music here. ........... 9/3/14 I worked on several Midwest artists' albums with recent and upcoming releases. All of these folks are incredibly kind and genuine; I strongly encourage you to support their music. The Ericksons JE Sunde Count This Penny Anna Vogelzang ............ 7/16/14 Our new Field Report album, Marigolden, will be released 10.7.14 on Partisan records. Listen to the first single, read an interview, and get more goodies here. ............ 5/22/14 I had a great time playing drums on this new Jeremiah Nelson EP. ............ 5/15/14 I’m here in Eau Claire, WI, working on the next Kalispell record and looking forward to an exciting few months ahead. Next week I head East/South for shows with Cheyenne Mize and Anna Roberts-Gevalt before teaching at some camps, playing some festivals, and hitting the road for more touring. See you out there. p.s. pretty excited about how the record is coming along and eagerly looking forward to sharing it with you. ............ 3/19/14 I hunkered down in the living room and covered Bonnie Prince Billy's "Careless Love" for a compilation curated by Slowcoustic, a music blog I enjoy. Listen here. .......... 3/8/14 It's turning out to be a long and bitterly cold winter in the Midwest, but that also happens to be ideal weather for writing and recording, which is what I've been up to. Field Report, JE Sunde, and Count This Penny all have new records coming out soon, and all of whom it's been a pleasure to make music with. Uh oh, ended that sentence with a preposition. ........... 12/23/13 We did it! Kalispell's Kickstarter campaign reached its funding goal, which means a new album will be underway in February. Sincerest thanks to everyone who helped by pledging and spreading the word. You hear it all the time 'cause it's true: we couldn't do this without you. A video and write-up about the project can be found here. I recently returned from working on the next Field Report album, which was recorded in Ontario... two weeks of great collaboration in the middle of a beautiful wilderness. Plenty more news to come where that's concerned. Otherwise, it'll be a relatively quiet winter, with just a few Field Report dates, including our upcoming New Year's Eve shows with Dawes, and a little production work on others' albums. Happy holidays! .............. 12/19/13 3 days left in our Kickstarter campaign! We're over halfway funded and looking forward to reaching our goal before midnight, Dec. 22nd. This is an all-or-nothing campaign, meaning Kalispell doesn't receive any funding if that goal isn't met. Help us record new music for you by making a pledge here: http://kck.st/1c7NyTo. .............. 11/21/13 Kalispell will head north this winter to record our second full-length album at April Base studio. Ben Sollee, Sean Watkins and other guests will be on board. We've launched a Kickstarter to fund the effort; check out the video above and make a pledge to receive some limited edition rewards! ............ 9/30/13 After an incredible spring/summer/fall of non-stop touring, things are winding down for the winter... somewhat. Field Report has a couple of special one-offs coming up, and I'll be driving around the Midwest for some short runs of solo shows, all of which are listed to the right. I'm excited to say both bands are coming off the road for the winter in order to record their next albums. Plenty of news to come where that's concerned! ............ 7/29/13 Played FloydFest with Field Report this weekend... non-stop fun. Along the way I sat in w/ Ben Sollee; then the articulate cellist and I led a panel discussion about mountaintop removal and other environmental issues in Appalachia. Oh and before all that happened I got my head knocked off by Lake Street Dive's set. Floyd, VA is a beautiful place and you should go there. .......... 7/2/13 Check out our cover of "Ghost of David" for Slowcoustic's Damien Jurado project! Thanks to Jess McIntosh, Ben Lester, and Ashlee Whitty for lending their sounds to the recording. .......... 6/4/13 More solo/duo shows posted! Looking forward to playing old and new songs in the company of Hey Marseilles and Brendan Losch. ............ 5/18/13 Scene: "Sandwich" ........... 4/29/13 Solo Wisconsin dates, plus FR shows with Josh Rouse and Richard Thompson, all over here------------------------------------------------>>> .......... 4/1/13 Field Report tour supporting Sara Watkins is over! I wish this was an April Fools type statement, but it isn't. Many thanks to Sara, Sean, Tyler, and Dan for the nightly bliss. ............ 2/18/13 Check out this Arco Session where I sing "Marion, MT" with a brass quintet and bass drum! Also, I'll be on the road again soon with Field Report. Lots of festivals and one-offs coming up; look to the right for new dates. .............. 12/20/12 I'm playing with a great Minneapolis-based sister duo, The Ericksons, on some of their upcoming shows. Ben Lester, my bandmate in Field Report and Kalispell, is playing as well, and we're having a blast on these songs from their upcoming record, The Wild. It releases January 17th. Check them out here. ............. 11/15/12 For the past two weeks I've enjoyed playing drums, banjo and fiddle with Field Report. On November 16th we're playing the second-to-last show of this tour at Minneapolis' Turf Club, and Kalispell will open. ............ 11/3/12 Kalispell tour was great! Jess and I were out for 6 weeks that flew by thanks to all the great friends and bands who were part of the journey. More about these people and places can be found in our blog. I've been home for a few days and am already packing for the next outing - this time with Milwaukee-based Field Report. Tour dates are listed to the right - hope to see you out there! .......... 9/4/12 Did you see? Look to the right! Kalispell heads out soon with the honor of playing with amazing friends like Phil Cook (Megafaun), Chance McCoy (Old Crow Medicine Show), Bro. Stephen, and many more. Not to mention a slew of takeaway shows, radio performances and a Daytrotter session. More details and dates to be announced. .......... 7/8/12 We've received a good deal of enthusiastic emails from fans of Kalispell's new album, Westbound, and can't thank you all enough for your support of the band. It's unbelievably humbling and encouraging to connect with people through music, and even a little bit strange to think that these songs which were holed up in our living room for so long have ventured out to far away ears. Critics' praise for the album has come from all over the country as well; you can read what these folks have to say on the press page. ............ 5/25/12 No Depression has featured Kalispell twice this month in their newsletter under "Some Of Our Favorites". Check out the articles of interest here and here. In other news, reviews of Westbound are starting to roll in, and we'll update the site with those soon. Thanks for listening! ........... 5/17/12 Happy release day! Westbound is out now, and you can purchase it here. I'm incredibly thankful to everyone who played on these songs, everyone who brought them to life on tour, and all the folks who have supported Kalispell over the past few months. We've got a busy summer ahead with lots of shows throughout the Midwest. Stay tuned. ................................................................................................................................... 4/4/12 Westbound is now streaming in full at Uprooted Music Review! The blog will also feature an in-depth interview as the May 17th release approaches. We have more news on the way, so stay tuned! ................................................................................................................................... 4/24/12 Dear friend Abigail Zimmer wrote these words about Westbound, and the degree to which her feelings upon listening reflect my own upon making is humbling. Do read. And check the tour dates for a very special show announcement! ................................................................................................................................... 4/10/12 Kalispell's new album, Westbound, is now available for pre-order! Also check out the single, "Lucky a Hundred Times", which you can download for free. AND, anyone who pre-orders Westbound will receive a free download of the Last Year EP. It's all right here. ................................................................................................................................... 3/30/12 Westbound release date announced // spring tour // album art posted Well friends, we're almost there. I've been working on this album for a long time; most of the tracks were recorded only a few months ago, although most of the songs have been with me for years. I certainly wouldn't have made it this far without your support, for which I'm thankful beyond words. In May I'll hit the road with Ben Lester (pedal steel, drums) and Eric Carlson (everything else) for a little Midwest/New England tour, the dates and locations for which are posted on the home page. Then we return home to play a much anticipated release show. Here are the details: May 17th @ House Of Rock special guests The Daredevil Christopher Wright and We Are The Willows doors 8pm, show at 9 $5, 21+ Also, for the all-ages crowd, we'll play a short, stripped down acoustic set earlier that day at Eau Claire's crown jewel, Revival Records. 6pm, free. And finally, feast your eyes on the fantastic album art of dear friend Jamie Bourgeois. That's right, a weighty, benevolent walrus riddled with secret messages and hidden objects pretty much sums up my feelings on this album. Which I'm really happy with, by the way. You'll hear a single soon. Promise. ................................................................................................................................... 3/14/12 Spring tour dates posted! ................................................................................................................................... 12/13/11 January Midwest/East Coast/Southern tour dates posted! ................................................................................................................................... 11/24/11 Earlier this month I hit the road for my first solo tour, and it was great. I visited with big time mentors Lee Sexton and Clyde Davenport, slept on the couches of generous friends new and old, shared in some great house shows, played a promising folk festival in its first year, heard lots of great bands, and took in long Appalachian drives and hours of an absolute tour requirement: Radiolab. I put up some pictures from the two-weeker here. Never got lonely either, on account of my friend Yusef who jumped on-board the morning I left Eau Claire. As Lee says, "He can cut it, boy!" ................................................................................................................................... 10/23/11 I'm excited to head out for some solo shows around the Midwest and South in November! Check the tour page. ................................................................................................................................... 10/2/11 We're home as of this evening from six shows around the Midwest, all of which were enjoyable for different reasons. We're so thankful to have kind, encouraging friends, without whose support there's no way we could work so hard at what we love. Actually, I guess we could still work hard at it, but it sure would be lonely. I'll be playing some soon-to-be-posted solo shows down South in early November, and until then we've got just a couple of dates in Minnesota and Wisconsin while work continues on the new album. In other news, I'm slow to catch-up on new music, and so although it's probably old news to you, I need to say that this weekend, Addie, Paul and Dave hipped me to St. Vincent, which had me reeling every time we threw it on in the car. ................................................................................................................................... 8/30/11 August tour was great! Thanks to our generous hosts, touring pal Scott Kirkpatrick (Bro. Stephen), several delicious Creole diners, and 8+ hours of Radiolab podcasts, we had a blast. Looking forward to shows in WI, MN, and IL over the next two months. Also, recordings have been posted of Kalispell playing live at Milwaukee radio station 91.7 WMSE on our last tour. Hear the set (featuring three songs from our upcoming full-length) over yonder. ................................................................................................................................... 8/14/11 I arrived home today from West Virginia totally exhausted and still on a high from all the amazing experiences at Augusta Old Time Week. Pictures and such are posted on the blog. After all that excitement, there's still a lot to come this month. This week Jess and I have a couple Stoop Singers stringband shows, then I leave for Kalispell tour. Check the tour page for dates! ................................................................................................................................... 7/25/11 In August, I'll be in West Virginia for a little while, playing fiddle and banjo at Augusta Old Time week. Then, it's back to Wisconsin for Kalispell tour! We're excited for these shows. ................................................................................................................................... 7/15/11 Lots of WI, MN, and IN shows in the works! Check the tour page for info. ................................................................................................................................... 4/27/11 EP release shows comin' atcha, Eau Claire! We couldn't be more excited. The first one's a duo show in early June - preparation for two release shows (with full band) following closely behind. Check the tour page for details on dates, times, and locations. Hope to see you at a show! ................................................................................................................................... 4/13/11 The Last Year EP is now available for listening (in its entirety!) at records.kalispellband.com. Go check it out! The EP features two alternate versions of songs from Kalispell's upcoming full-length, plus a previously unreleased track. It will become available for download after the June release. The Huntington Ave. EP, released last summer, is also available for listening. Late summer tour dates are also in the works, so check back for those soon! Get in touch via kalispellband@gmail.com if you're interested in hosting a house show or housing the [very small in numbers] band. ................................................................................................................................... 4/12/11 New website! Check back for updates on the release of the Last Year EP. |
